Foot complications are more likely when diabetes has been present for many years or when blood glucose has often been above target. Other risks include smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, kidney disease, obesity, poor vision, difficulty reaching the feet, previous foot ulcers, foot deformities, poor-fitting shoes, neuropathy, and peripheral artery disease.
A history of amputation or previous diabetic foot ulcer greatly increases future risk.
Social factors matter too. People may delay care because of cost, transportation, work schedules, lack of insurance, language barriers, or fear of bad news. Unfortunately, diabetic foot problems are not impressed by our schedules. They progress whether we are ready or not.
