WASHINGTON, June 3, 2025 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ – Summer should be one of the happiest times of the year for children; however, for millions of them in the United States, it is the most difficult time as they miss out on the school meals many families rely on. This is especially true in Latino households, where more than 1 in 4 children live with hunger. That’s why the national No Kid Hungry campaign, which works to end childhood hunger, has joined with beloved and respected figures in the Latino community to publicize the food programs available this summer.

Renowned chef, author, restaurateur, and television host Lorena Garcia; actress, television host, and former Miss Universe Dayanara Torres; and actor and producer Eugenio Derbez have joined this cause to inform families about meal distribution points and direct benefits for purchasing food. Through public service announcements, social media, and interviews, they invite Latino families to visit NoKidHungry.org/Ayuda, No Kid Hungry’s summer resource center, where they can find information on how to access these programs.

“Food is more than just nourishment; it’s a source of joy, connection, and community,” said Lorena Garcia. “As a chef, I know that every meal counts, especially for children. That’s why I’m excited to once again join No Kid Hungry and do my part to ensure all children have the happy summer they deserve.”

“As a mother, I recognize how difficult summer can be for many families, especially when it comes to feeding children. These new programs mark a historic expansion for summer nutrition for children across the country,” added Dayanara Torres. “I’m proud to join No Kid Hungry again, so families know there’s help available. Our children deserve to grow up strong, healthy, and full of hope.”

“For many families, summer represents a huge challenge. When children leave school, they also lose access to the meals they receive there, and with high food prices, it’s often not enough,” said Eugenio Derbez. “I’m joining No Kid Hungry to spread the word and let families know there’s help available so their children can have food and enjoy a joy-filled summer, as every child deserves.”

Thanks to bipartisan legislation passed in 2022, championed by No Kid Hungry and other organizations, children can now receive summer meals in more communities. This includes home delivery or meal pickup services in rural areas, where transportation is a barrier. Additionally, eligible families can receive $120 per school-aged child to help with summer food purchases through the Summer EBT or Sun Bucks program. This year, 37 states, Washington, D.C., 5 territories, and 5 tribal nations plan to offer Summer EBT.

Prior to the expansion of these resources, only 2.8 million children had access to summer meals. By 2024, its first year of implementation, it is estimated that more than 18 million children would have access to Summer EBT. No Kid Hungry is working to expand this program to all 50 states in the coming years and provide grant funding to ensure that both the Summer EBT benefit and rural meals reach more families. Together, these programs could help up to 31 million children across the United States.

No Kid Hungry is collaborating with partners such as Arby’s Foundation, Dollar Tree, HelloFresh, Tropical Smoothie Cafe, and Williams-Sonoma, Inc. to expand access to healthy meals for all children, during the summer and year-round.
