NOTE FROM THE EDITOR: I thank Trent for giving us the opportunity to see his powerful documentary, “Among The Discarded”.  It is a film that I think, and hope, everyone must see.  In my humble opinion, there are too many people in this world that fail to see the homeless for what they always will be regardless of the circumstances, a human being that we all should be willing to help if/when the situation presents itself.  I plan to work with Trent, and other interested individuals or agencies, to have showings of this video in our area.  If anyone is interested in joining our efforts to bring Trent’s documentary to a theater in our area, please e-mail us at:  [email protected]

AMONG THE DISCARDED COLLAGE

Among the Discarded – A documentary by Trent Dion Soto

On his 44th birthday, artist Trent Dion Soto voluntarily joined the homeless population, on L.A.’s notorious Skid Row for 30 days in an attempt to foster positive change upon the community.

What is “Skid Row”?

[su_youtube url=”https://youtu.be/8Ye7N3mL2ME”]

Skid Row contains one of the largest stable populations (THEY NUMBER IN THE THOUSANDS) of homeless people in the United States.  The sidewalks are lined with cardboard boxes, tents, and shopping carts.

among the discarded 2Skid Row is a portion of the area in downtown Los Angeles east of the Financial  District  and  the  Historic  Downtown  Center,  partially  overlaying  the  core  of  the downtown Industrial District.  It is generally referred to by the City as part of the “Central City East” area, a fifty-block sector of downtown.

Trent’s goal was total immersion, as he wanted to live as they did, with zero outside assistance.  To accomplish this, Trent only brought basic toiletries, art supplies and his trusty GoPro camera, to capture the experience.  Through Trent’s eyes, and personal interactions, you will experience, first-hand, the cheers, tears, struggles and dangers of the homeless epidemic via this raw, emotional expose.

ABOUT TRENT:  He is a free-lance artist who, for the last 25 years, has worked in the entertainment industry.  He resides in Panama City, Florida.  Among The Discarded marks Trent’s directorial debut as a Documentary Filmmaker.
