From Juneteenth Reflections to Senior Empowerment: Celebrating Community Spirit in Enterprise and Dothan

ENTERPRISE, Ala. — The Juneteenth Celebration at the Jimmy H. Baker Center for the Arts was a moving tribute to freedom and heritage, uniting the Wiregrass community in a night of history and artistry. Juneteenth, commemorating the 1865 emancipation in Texas, was honored with powerful performances and communal reflection.

The centerpiece of the evening was the play The Woman in the Mirror, written and produced by Ms. Maxine, a celebrated guardian of cultural storytelling. The event was expertly coordinated by Mary Hughley from Good Samaritan Helping Hand, ensuring a seamless evening of empowerment and reflection. Her evocative performance delved into self-discovery and resilience, leaving a profound impact on the audience. The evening also shone with vibrant cultural dance as DJ Mamizonga (Myra Aruz) and her granddaughter, Blanquita Aruz, performed a Puerto Rican folkloric dance, celebrating heritage and intergenerational connection.

In addition to the Juneteenth celebration, the community is also looking forward to a vibrant event in Dothan on August 15th. Carrie “Dr. Tut” Tut Hamilton, founder and CEO of Seniors On The Runway, will lead a three-part fashion-theatre event for adults aged 50 and older. Launched in 2006, Seniors On The Runway uses fashion and movement to boost seniors’ self-esteem, encourage physical activity, and combat isolation and depression. Dr. Tut’s extensive fashion and design background brings a unique vibrancy to this event. It will be a three-part program with a special surprise finale. Tickets are available now: general admission is $40, tables of five are $50 per seat, and VIP tickets are $75. The event will take place at The Forum in downtown Dothan, and seating is limited—so be sure to secure your spot!
