Latin Women’s Initiative (LWI) was originally created in 1995 by three community-minded Mexican women who were moved by the plight of Houston’s impoverished inner-city females.  The original entity was called Mexican Women’s Initiative (MWI).

The founders’ strategy was to educate its members about the local socio-economic conditions and to fundraise and provide volunteer services to improve the outlook for this growing population.

Initial efforts from them included fundraising for health fairs (with some local hospitals offering support and information along with exams for children and adults to diagnose cholesterol, diabetes, etc.), and contributions to the community for various educational and abuse treatment programs.

In 2006, MWI’s name was changed to the Latin Women’s Initiative (LWI) to reflect the growing and diverse Hispanic community.

LWI’s mission is to make a difference in the lives of Latin women and children by providing financial and volunteer support through local non-profit organizations.

They currently have over 200 members and it continues to grow every year.

It has blossomed into one of Houston’s top Hispanic fundraising organizations and supports nonprofits that primarily assist Hispanic women and children. Since its inception, Latin Women’s Initiative has donated over $2 million, making a significant difference in the lives of thousands.

In 2021, LWI contributed $150,000 to five agencies serving Latina women and their families in the areas of health care, nutrition, education, and social services.
