The number of Americans living paycheck to paycheck is at its lowest point in five years
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. , July 15, 2026 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — After three years of steady increases, the number of Americans living paycheck to paycheck has fallen sharply to its lowest level in five years. 48% of respondents say they will be living paycheck to paycheck in 2026, a dramatic drop from the record high of 69% in 2025, according to the ninth annual Debt.com Budget Survey , which surveyed more than 1,000 Americans.
However, the data reveals that Americans are not letting their guard down. Nearly half the population continues to face financial hardship , and an overwhelming 95% say that current economic uncertainty and rising costs make budgeting more important than ever.
“A 21-point drop in the number of Americans living paycheck to paycheck is a huge victory in theory, but it all depends on the context,” says Howard Dvorkin, a certified public accountant (CPA) and president of Debt.com. “We can’t look at that 48% figure and think the battle is won. Nearly half of our country is still just one paycheck away from a financial crisis.”
Although the media focuses on high inflation and rising interest rates, Debt.com’s 2026 survey reveals a significant gap: despite more favorable economic data, ordinary consumers remain concerned. Key findings:

- Budgeting works : 85% of Americans keep a budget, and 88% of them say it has actively helped them get out of debt or stay debt-free.
- Retirement is ahead of inflation: Retirement rose to 20% as the main motivation for budgeting, the highest figure in the survey’s history, while inflation as a trigger fell from 31% to 23%.
- Coordination at home : 44% of respondents report that all household members work together to stay within budget.
“Creating a budget isn’t a luxury hobby; it’s a financial safety net. Data shows that 88% of people who budget are able to successfully manage or avoid debt . Whether you prefer the traditional pen-and-paper method or use a mobile app, consistency is what protects you from the next economic shift,” Dvorkin concludes.
