MAKING A DIFFERENCE – Kendra Bell

Kendra is a fourth-grade educator at Shalimar Elementary School and the author of Wooly the Bully. Originally from North Carolina, she was raised as the oldest of seven siblings—an experience that instilled in her a deep sense of leadership, responsibility, and compassion that continues to influence both her classroom and her writing.
Kendra resides in Bluewater Bay with her husband, a retired Air Force officer. Together, they are raising three children. As both an educator and a mother, she is deeply committed to supporting children’s academic and social-emotional development.
Inspired by a visit from the author of Zoila the Zebra, Kendra was motivated to pursue her dream of becoming a children’s author. Drawing from her personal experience as a victim of bullying during middle school, she wrote Wooly the Bully with a clear mission in mind. Her guiding model is, “Stop bullying at the source.” She believes meaningful change begins long before disciplinary action is needed. As Kendra states, “My goal is to stop bullying at the source by helping children develop empathy and understanding for one another.” She further explains, “True prevention begins when we address the heart behind the behavior, not just the behavior itself.”
Through engaging rhyme and relatable storytelling, Wooly the Bully explores some of the underlying reasons children may bully and encourages young readers to practice kindness, empathy, and self-reflection. Kendra hopes her work will serve as a catalyst for positive cultural change within schools and communities. Kendra has expanded her story beyond the pages of her book by writing and recording an original song inspired by her beloved character, Wooly. The song is accompanied by an engaging music video that brings the story’s message to life through movement, rhythm, and fun.
Kendra offers interactive author visits to schools, where she reads Wooly the Bully, performs and leads students in singing and dancing to Wooly’s song. During her visits, she facilitates age-appropriate discussions about empathy, kindness, and understanding others, reinforcing her mission to “Stop bullying at the source.”
Her presentations are designed to be high-energy, memorable experiences that not only entertain but also inspire students to practice compassion in their daily lives.
