Miami – FL Jan 6, 2025 – Sachamama and partners are excited to announce the launch of a new communications campaign aimed at building support for the strengthening of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. Under the banner “Protect the Keys, Strengthen Florida’s Economy and Health,” this campaign amplifies the voices of South Floridians whose livelihoods depend on the ocean, showcasing the vital role the ocean plays in supporting communities, economies, and ecosystems in the region.

The Florida Keys

The Florida Keys, known for their vibrant marine life and unique coral reefs, face growing threats from climate change and human activity. Expanding the sanctuary would preserve the environment and promote sustainable economic development. Octavio Aburto, a professor at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, highlighted the positive impact such measures have, both on marine ecosystems and as social and economic benefits. Jesús Gudiño, co-owner of The Dive Shop in Key Largo, emphasized the region’s economic reliance on the health of Marine Protected Areas: “The Keys community is immensely dependent on the sanctuary.”

Backbone of our economy

“The ocean is not only a source of food and livelihoods for Florida’s residents – it is the backbone of our economy and way of life. Protecting it is not just an environmental priority; it’s essential for our economic future,” says Carlos Zegarra, Executive Director of Sachamama. The campaign seeks active community participation, urging Floridians to call on the state’s leadership to support the expansion proposed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which is in its final approval stage.
