YOU HAVE THE POWER!

By: Silvia Zuniga C | [email protected]

Many times we feel lost and don’t know how to get back on track, but now is the time. It’s time to decide that we are masters of our emotions and our attitudes. So from today on, we will say every day, “I have the power to change!” We all have the power to change our lives, and change is possible through determination, effort, and the pursuit of personal and spiritual growth.

Changes to improve your lifestyle:

– Achieve your short- and long-term goals

– Learn from your mistakes

– Surround yourself with positive people

– Celebrate your achievements

– Learn new and good habits

– Quit habits that harm the body, both inside and out.

Each of us has been given the power to change our lives. As part of the Lord’s great plan of happiness, we have personal agency to make decisions, so we can decide to be better and do things better. We all need to change in some ways; that is, some of us need to be kinder at home, less selfish, listen better, and be more considerate in how we treat others. Some of us have habits we need to change, habits that harm ourselves and those around us. Sometimes, we may need a jolt to force us to change. In the Bible, in the book of Acts, chapter 9, there is a man named Saul (Peter) who was blinded for killing Christians. It wasn’t until he had a personal encounter with God that he changed and received the miracle of regaining his sight. Wonderful! I hope none of us go through that to start making changes in our lives. We need to stop doing what hurts us and start making positive changes. Another type of change I’d like to talk about is the recovery from enslaving habits, which include the evils related to access to alcohol, drugs, tobacco, etc. Drug misuse ruins families, costs billions of dollars in lost productivity, strains the health care system, and ends lives. 4 It is a curse on society.

There are many types of addictions, and it is difficult for someone suffering from a serious addiction to change, as some are mind-altering. A recent article on addiction stated, “In the brains of addicts, there is less activity in the frontal cortex, where rational thinking can control impulsive behavior.” 5 We must abstain from anything that prevents us from fulfilling God’s purposes for us and that jeopardizes the blessings of eternity. We are in this life so that the spirit can control the body, not the other way around.

Any type of addiction exacts a terrible price of pain and suffering, and can even affect us spiritually and physically. However, there is hope. We can all change, and if we place everything in God’s hands, it is possible!

We begin by making the decision to change. Admitting that we need help opens doors to hope. Let’s have courage and humility, and little by little, with a lot of effort and staying positive, we’ll see beautiful days. Never give up if you can…! Always smile.
