UKRAINIAN CHILDREN CELEBRATE ART AND PEACE with HOMAGE to Morris Lapidus at The Ritz-Carlton
70 years of fun at the Ritz-Carlton begins with…
WHAT: In partnership with USA Help Ukraine (https://usahelpua.us/) and Barry University, The Ritz-Carlton, South Beach is inviting Ukrainian children displaced from the war to take part in an interactive art project facilitated by students from Design & Architecture Senior High School (DASH), as well Teena Edwards of BeachcatConcepts.com, has enlisted three volunteers: Two from the Marketing Department at Life Extension®, Rebecca Mark and Jorie Mark and the third, Lenny Castells of Next LVL Realty. The Ukrainian children are part of the Seeds of Hope, an initiative spearheaded by Ekaterina Elagina, a graduate student at Barry University’s Adrian Dominican School of Education, Leadership, and Human Development. The art lesson provides these young minds a chance to channel their thoughts and experiences into a creative outlet and is also meant to instill hope about the possibilities that lay ahead. The children will also be joined by the Mayor of Odessa, Ukraine, and the Odessa delegation, who are in town to sign a sister cities agreement with Miami Beach and Mayor Dan Gelber.
The children will “walk and talk” through the Morris Lapidus-designed DiLido— apropos as Lapidus himself was a Ukrainian child refugee in 1903. Lapidus emerged on the Miami Beach scene opening in December 1953 with his fabulously over-the-top styled lobby of the DiLido—using hubcaps in the lobby circular wall– that was a harbinger of his beloved MiMO style. The DiLido, The Ritz-Carlton, South Beach, seventy years ago opened to one year of glorious food, fun, and music. An incredible year and a fabulous opening season to be regaled in now with the great zest of children coming into the holiday season.
Prior to the interactive art project, the children will receive a tour of “An Exhibit for Peace,” a 30-piece art collection by Manolis Projects commissioned by the Ritz-Carlton South Beach, to demonstrate solidarity with the victims of the war on Ukraine through artistic expression. The artwork within the collection feature palettes of blue and yellow, representing the sun, sand, sky, and ocean, and the colors of the Ukrainian flag. Hopefully, inspirational to the children as they embark on making their own zest full art cards.
Following the interactive art project, the South Florida Symphony String Quartet will play a medley of songs honoring Ukrainian traditions before ending with “Ukraine Has Not Yet Perished,” the national anthem of Ukraine. As part of the performance, the children will be singing “Chervona Kalyna” with the South Florida Symphony String Quartet. The national anthem will be Miami Beach’s final farewell to the Odessa delegation before they travel back home.
