UF/IFAS Extension-Gadsden County: Who We Are

UF/IFAS Extension-Gadsden County: Who We Are

By Yolanda Y. Goode, 4-H Youth Development Agent, Gadsden County

UF/IFAS Extension-Gadsden County mission is to educate local clientele (individuals, families, youth, and businesses) with practical information and best practices through workshops, camps, webinars, and consultation to improve the overall quality of their lives. Information shared is research based from the University of Florida and other universities in the Cooperative Extension System. The five areas our office in Gadsden county covers are 4-H Youth Development, Agriculture and Natural resources, Community Resource Development, Family and Consumer Sciences, and Horticulture and Small farms.

width=My area of focus is 4-H Youth Development where I use research related to positive youth development to help Gadsden’s youth gain leadership, citizenship, and life skills. My program is year round. Adult and youth volunteers help to accomplish the above mission.

One thing that happens in the summer is that many youth are not engaged in active learning which is very important to prevent learning lags. Teachers can tell if students have engaged in active learning over the summer. The summer camps offered through UF/IFAS Extension-Gadsden County 4-H program include hands-on learning experiences and fun. They are designed to help youth gain specific knowledge and skills as well as life skills such as problem solving and critical thinking.

width=The first Gadsden 4-H camp coming up this summer is our residential camp. We travel to Madison County to stay at 4-H Camp Cherry Lake on Monday and return to Quincy mid-afternoon on Friday. The dates for this camp are June 4 – 8, 2018 and the cost is $200. This camp is open to 4-H and non 4-H youth who are 8 – 13 years old. Your child must have turned 8 before September 1, 2017 to attend 4-H Camp Cherry Lake. Transportation is provided. Registration begins April 1, 2018 and ends May 18. Limited space is available and will go fast.
