The Moment You Realize Your Shoes No Longer Fit
By Paulina Aguilar
There is always a moment, quiet or undeniable, when you look down at your feet and realize the shoes you have been wearing your entire life no longer belong to you. They carried you far. They protected you when you did not know better. But suddenly, they feel tight, outdated, and uncomfortable.
That moment was my awakening.
Moving from Ecuador to the United States did not begin with confidence or certainty. It began with discomfort. With the realization that the shoes I brought with me, my beliefs, my fears, and my cultural conditioning, were not designed for the woman I was becoming. I was not broken. I was simply walking in shoes meant for an earlier version of myself.
Many women recognize this feeling immediately. We appear strong, capable, and successful, yet something feels off. Like walking miles in shoes that once fit perfectly but now limit every step forward. We blame the job, the relationship, the country, or the timing. Rarely do we stop to ask if it is not the road, but the shoes.
The beginning of this journey is not about reinvention. It is about recognition. Recognizing that survival shoes are not success shoes. The pair you needed to endure, adapt, and survive may not be the pair you need to lead, earn, and thrive.
For years, I tried to move forward while carrying old fears stitched into my soles. Fear of being seen. Fear of choosing myself. Fear of stepping boldly in a world that taught me to stay grateful, quiet, and small. But you cannot walk into your future while dragging your past beneath your feet.
The first step is awareness. Not motivation. Not strategy. Awareness. Looking down and asking yourself who chose these shoes for you. Were they shaped by culture, family expectations, or beliefs about what a woman should be.
Here is the truth many women are never told. You are allowed to upgrade. You are allowed to change shoes in the middle of the journey. You are allowed to want more without guilt.
Before confidence comes decision. Before success comes solid footing. And before any big leap, there is a powerful moment when you decide you are done walking in what no longer fits.
That moment is the first step forward.
One Minute Reset
Pause. Ask yourself, are the shoes I am wearing helping me move forward or keeping me stuck? Choose your next step with intention.
Mantra
“I choose shoes that fit the woman I am becoming.”
