The History of Your Future

By Peggy Brockman – Business Coach

Merry December! My husband and I just had the privilege of taking a cross-country trip in our motor home. In six weeks, we covered 6080 miles and 18 states from Florida to California to Oregon and back.  You can’t take that type of trip without a lot of planning. If you want to get where you want to go in life, you must plan. You must map out your course. We first had to map the route – We had a destination on a specific date – Merced, California on October 16th for my husband’s Air Force 693rd & 93rd Bombardment Wing reunion….our FUTURE. We were planning to leave in Early September, head to Oregon to see kids and grandkids, then down to California to see more kids and grandkids and the reunion. Life happened. We went for a doctor’s appointment in August and found out Bill would have to have surgery in September. As much as we plan, life happens and we learn to adjust and be flexible.

We could have cancelled our trip – after all, there was somewhere really important to me that I needed to be towards the end of October and we knew that was our ending point… until it wasn’t. So, we regrouped, put our future plan on a temporary hold, but we still planned. We plotted the trip knowing that if we got the go ahead on September 27th from the doctor, we could leave on the 29th, reverse our trip and still hit all our targets on time. It would mean I would have to give up that very important event to me as well as another opportunity that popped up in the middle of planning. That is called sacrifice – for the future goal.

Life works that way….or at least it should.  A new year is upon us.  Have you planned the history of YOUR future?  NOW is the time – MAKE 3 HOURS JUST FOR YOU – all in one sitting….YES you CAN do it!  Start with where you want to be….your future.  Fully imagine your life 10 years from now in 2026. Write it down in full description.  What does it look like? Your family, career, health, surroundings, friends, financially, etc. Don’t leave anything out.  Once you have that, then go back to the history of your future. What choices and decisions did you make in 2016 that would change the course of your future? What did you stop doing and believing and what did you start doing and believing that got you to your future? Along the next 10 years what came up that you needed to plan for – WRITE IT ALL DOWN!!

Life is full of challenges – just like our trip was. We lost a slide out motor that had to be replaced – major expense we weren’t planning on – the wind ripped off our side panel and our awning went sailing at 60 miles an hour on a mountainous road. We used a lot of duct tape and rope we hadn’t planned on using – in fact we didn’t have duct tape on the coach – we had to stop and buy some. You better bet we always travel with it now! You see, we learn along the way from our mistakes – if we are lucky. We don’t let it stop us – if we are lucky. WE JUST KEEP ROLLING IF WE ARE LIVING THE HISTORY OF OUR FUTURE….and if we have MAPPED IT OUT properly. DO IT….BEFORE the end of December. Merry Christmas all!  See you in 2017!
