Save the date to join us on the Butterfield Overland Stage Line as we reenact the 1920 drive through west Texas to find the best route for the transcontinental Old Spanish Trail (OST) auto and truck-paved highway.  The Old Spanish Trail was planned in Mobile, Alabama in 1915 to connect St. Augustine, Tallahassee, Pensacola, and Mobile to New Orleans. Following the Great World War, plans were extended across the desert to the Pacific.  Paving began in 1919, was completed in 1929, and celebrated with grand finale motorcades along US90 and US80. Drivers proceeded in April of 1929 from San Diego, California to St. Augustine, Florida and in October 3000 miles, St. Augustine to San Diego.

Centennial reenactments of annual national Old Spanish Trail weekend conferences have been successfully celebrated in Mobile, Pensacola and Tallahassee and now are being celebrated in the western states by the Old Spanish Trail Centennial Celebration Association.  Free to everyone, open to the public, March 24-26, 2022 event will be held in Alpine, Texas, reenacting highway planners drive around the Valentine, Marfa, Ft. Davis area to find the best route to pave a highway. Should the highway follow the paths of Indians, Vaqueros, and Conquistadors; trails of Cattle, Stage Coaches, and Wagon Trains; or forge a new way from Ft. Stockton to Van Horn, Texas?  Join us to hear the stories, enjoy the spring wildflowers, star filled sky, and mountain vistas.  A wonderful OST experience.
