The Florida Commission on Human Relations

By Joey Arellano

Mission & Vision:

Mission: The Florida Commission on Human Relations prevents unlawful discrimination by ensuring that all people have access to equal opportunities in employment, housing, and public accommodations.

Vision: The Florida Commission on Human Relations will eliminate discrimination in the state.

About:

Fair Housing is the right of every individual to seek housing of their choice without it being limited based on the protected classes of: Race, color, national origin, religion, sex, familial status, and disability. The Fair Housing Act of 1968 and its amendments makes it illegal to discriminate based on one of the protected classes. The Florida Commission on Human Relations (the Commission) investigates fair housing discrimination complaints whenever filed with the Commission. The Commission covers the entire state of Florida, with the exception of four counties and two cities that have their own Fair Housing Assistance Programs (FHAP). These counties include: Broward, Duval, Pinellas, and Palm Beach. The cities are the Incorporated City of Orlando and the Incorporated City of Tampa. The Commission provides education and outreach training throughout the State of Florida as a method to combat discriminatory practices in housing. As a neutral agency, we serve as the premier entity that upholds the Fair Housing Act to its full capacity.
