Miami-Dade County is preparing for its next “Adopt a Tree” event, part of an ongoing program that has distributed more than 250,000 trees to residents since its inception in 2001.
The tree adoption is scheduled for Saturday, September 6, 2025, from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. (or until trees run out). It will be held at the Moss Center, located at 10950 SW 211th Street, Miami, FL 33189. Parking will be free.
To participate, pre-registration is required, which will be available starting the first week of August by calling 305-372-6710 or emailing [email protected].
According to information provided on the Miami-Dade County website, trees will be delivered on a first-come, first-served basis. While pre-registration does not guarantee tree availability, it does verify eligibility.
The tree selection includes varieties such as Firebush, Grafted Starfruit, Grafted Mango, Jaboticaba, Jackfruit, Jamaican Caper, Red Mulberry, White Stopper, and Yellow Necklacepod.
“The trees selected for adoption are well-adapted to our subtropical climate and provide good shade as they mature,” stated Miami-Dade County.
For a Healthier and More Beautiful Environment
This program offers single-family homeowners and duplexes in Miami-Dade County up to two free trees each year. The goal is to help create a healthier environment in urban and suburban areas, as well as beautify the city.
Participants must bring photo identification, preferably with the residential property address. Other forms of identification, such as utility bills, are also acceptable, as long as photo identification is also provided.
If the participant rents the property, they must provide a photocopy of the owner’s identification and written authorization to plant the trees.
Among the benefits of adopting and planting a tree is that it improves the appearance of the home; it can also help reduce air conditioning costs by providing shade.
Environmentally, it contributes to a natural habitat for wildlife and reduces flooding by absorbing excess rainwater and increasing infiltration. Planting trees also removes significant amounts of carbon dioxide from the air, reducing the impact on climate change.
