May is Women’s Health Month – Let’s Talk, Laugh, and Check In!

By Marcos Otero, Retired Physician Associate

May isn’t just for Mother’s Day and flowers—it’s also Women’s Health Month! So ladies, this is your friendly, slightly sarcastic, medically approved reminder to check in on your health. Because you can’t run the world (or your family, job, side hustle, and that group chat) if you’re running on empty.

What is Women’s Health Month?

It’s a whole month focused on encouraging women to put themselves first for once. Yes, really. Doctors’ appointments, mental check-ins, body tune-ups—this is the time to get it all done.

Top 5 Health Topics Women Shouldn’t Ignore

  • Heart Health – Not just a “man’s disease.” Heart disease is the #1 killer of women. Know your numbers (blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar).
  • Reproductive Health – Pap smears, mammograms, birth control, menopause—fun? No. Necessary? Absolutely.
  • Mental Health – You’re not just “moody.” Stress, anxiety, depression are real and common. Therapy is not a weakness—it’s a superpower.
  • Bone Health – Calcium isn’t just in your latte. After 30, bones start to break up with you unless you give them attention.
  • Preventive Care – That includes vaccines, cancer screenings, and yes, even that colonoscopy you’re avoiding.

Common Excuses Women Use

  • “I’m too busy.”
  • “I feel fine.”
  • “I’ll go next month.”
Let’s translate that: “I’ve prioritized everything and everyone else.”
This May, flip the script. Take care of you first—then go back to saving the world.

Easy Wins for Women’s Health This Month

  • Book that doctor’s appointment (finally).
  • Walk 30 minutes a day.
  • Drink water like it’s your job.
  • Say “no” without apologizing.
  • Laugh more—it’s good for your blood pressure.

Reminder: Self-Care is Not Selfish

Bubble baths and spa days are great, but real self-care is:

✔️ Taking your meds
✔️ Getting enough sleep
✔️ Setting boundaries
✔️ Asking for help
✔️ Eating something green (no, not a lime margarita)

Final Thought:

Whether you’re a mom, aunt, sister, grandmother, or just a woman being awesome—your health matters. This May, do one thing just for you. And if that includes a mammogram and a mani-pedi? Even better.
