Fifth Annual Microtheater Festival

Por Alejandra Gutiérrez, director, Tallahassee Hispanic Theater

The Tallahassee Hispanic Theater will present its Fifth Annual Microtheater Festival on July 29 and 30, 2022 at 7:30 pm at the Carriage House on historical grounds of Goodwood Museum and Gardens.

The festival, that has become a landmark in the Summer cultural calendar of Tallahassee, will present a series of 15 to 20-minute plays written by Hispanic playwrights, performed in English. This year, the festival will also include the world premiere of an original play written by two members of the company.

In addition to the plays, the audience will have the opportunity to enjoy drinks and Hispanic food provided by Tally Arepas (available for purchase), and live Hispanic music throughout the event.

On Friday night, July 29, Talumba, a Tallahassee-based Latin American music ensemble, will perform live, and, on Saturday night, July 30, Charles Santiago will be performing live Hispanic guitar music.

Microtheater brings short stage performances up close to the audience in unusual venues. In the beautiful Carriage House, the audience will be able to enjoy the setting, music, food, and performances (presented all in the same open space) while moving freely around the space and mingling with others.

The audience will enjoy Fairy Tale, a comedy written by Spanish playwright Adrian Novella, that presents the encounter between a prince and a princess dating in the 21st century! The play is directed by Mattie Ward and performed by Carolina Merida and Abraham Islas.

The futuristic drama Contract Fully Executed, written by Argentine playwright Claudio Regis and directed by Arden Kelly, tells the story of a sales promoter selling a highly unusual service. Actors Leslie Gray and Joe Fisher will perform.

Alejandra Gutierrez adapted The Fling, a short story by Argentine writer Angelica Gorodisher, into a monologue by a female prisoner who recounts a story of love, betrayal, and revenge.

In We Need to Talk, a man receives a stressful voicemail message from his girlfriend that sets him into a drunken tailspin. The play was written by Spanish playwright Santi Portela, directed by Kevin Carr and performed by Mike Herrin and Kevin Carr.

The piece And Because Love Battles, an original play written by two members of THT, Alejandra Gutierrez and Kevin Carr, will be presented in its world premiere in this festival. Who is the better poet? Pablo Neruda or Jorge Luis Borges? A man and a woman learn more than they expect about these two poets (and themselves!) in this romantic comedy with a twist directed by Ben Gunter and performed by Tiffany Canseco and Drew Keck.

Don’t miss the opportunity to enjoy these fantastic contemporary plays while enjoying live music, Hispanic food, and drinks!

The cost of the tickets is $25/person. $20 (students, seniors, and Goodwood members), and they are available online at www.tallahasseehispanictheater.org, or at the door.
