What type of doctor should I see when I am sick?

Most of us have a primary care provider. Primary Care providers are the gatekeepers and coordinate your care. They treat a majority of problems and refer to a specialist for specialty or more complex care.

Primary care providers include:

  • Family practice physician -focus on family and treat all ages.
  • Internal medicine physician – focus on adults
  • Pediatricians- focus on children
  • Geriatric medicine – focus on elderly

Specialist – begin in primary care and then intensify their training in one specialty. Examples are ob-gyn, neurologist, cardiologist, and surgeons.

See Medical Specialist post to find a more extensive list and click on each to see these treats.
