7th Micro Theater Festival!

By Alejandra Gutierrez, PhD, Director Tallahassee Hispanic Theater

Summer is here, and Tallahassee Hispanic Theater is bringing the seventh edition of its Annual Micro Theater Festival. As every year, the festival will take place at the beautiful Goodwood Museum & Gardens on August 9th and 10th, at 7:30 p.m.

The Micro Theater Festival has become a staple in the cultural summer landscape of north Florida and like every year, it will present a series of 15 to 20-minute plays written by Hispanic playwrights, performed in English. Some of the plays will be presented in translation for the first time.

On Friday, Charles Santiago will perform Hispanic guitar music, and Isa y el Combo Machete will offer their Latin twist with boleros, cumbias, sones and bossa.

On Saturday, Tocamos Mas comes back to play their combination of traditional Latin music arrangements and dance music performed by a professional group of musicians combining keyboards, congas, timbales, bass guitar, and vocals.

As usual, the audience will have the opportunity to enjoy drinks and Hispanic food provided by the local Venezuelan food truck Tally Arepas (available for purchase) before and throughout the event.

Following the premise of bringing short stage performances up close to the audience, the festival will take place at the Carriage House on the historic grounds of the Goodwood Museum and Gardens, where the audience will be able to enjoy the setting, music, food, and performances while moving freely around the space and mingling with others.

These are the plays you will be enjoying this year.

“Before Dinner”. Written by the late Venezuelan playwright Ibrahim Guerra, this short piece, written as part of a series about urban violence in Caracas, Venezuela, brings us up close with the tragic lives of regular individuals who see their world changed by the hard reality they live in. Directed by Marlene DuBois.

“The Visit”, written by Spanish playwright Vicente Cañon, is a dark comedy about a man who in the middle of the night receives an unexpected visitor. Directed by Jeff Mandel.

“The Union of Jose & Maite Inc.” by Almudena Vasquez was part of our third micro theater festival that was released online. This year we will be able to enjoy a live version of the story of Maite and Jose, a broke couple with no money to pay their mortgage, who come up with an idea to end their financial distress: getting married! And they have a plan! Directed by Tiffany Underwood.

“How to Go Back to the Real World”, by Spanish playwright Juan Carlos Heras, tells the story of the hilarious first date of a couple who met online and are in a crusade to fight the lack of emotional connection in social media. Wouldn’t it be great to be able to look into each other’s eyes again?

“Landlocked” is the local play featured at the festival. Written and director by Tahirih Lee, in this piece we see what happens when a young American woman in 1924 Cuba chooses to cross barriers that are not supposed to be crossed.  What can result from a risky meeting of different cultures, classes, races, and languages?

THT is delighted to welcome the fantastic group of directors and actors working on this event and invite everyone to enjoy a different and fun theatrical experience!

Festival Tickets are $25 (general) and $20 (students, seniors and Goodwood members) and will be available at our website www.tallahasseehispanictheater.org. For additional information, contact [email protected], and don’t forget to follow us on Facebook and Instagram for details of the event.
