There is a new Mom at the Gulf Breeze Zoo
The Gulf Breeze Zoo welcomed a new baby giraffe! Gabby, a 13 year old reticulated giraffe, gave birth to the 5’ 8” male calf early in the morning on March 27th.
Giraffe are the tallest land mammals with males reaching up to 18 feet tall. Giraffe generally give birth to 1 calf after a gestation of around 457 days (15 months). Overall, giraffe populations are considered stable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature; however large portions of their natural habitats have been destroyed. The Reticulated African giraffe population has been estimated to range from only 4,500 to 4,700 in the wild.
The new baby has been named, Gideon and is already well over 6 feet tall! Big baby, Gideon, his mother, Gabby and the whole giraffe family are currently available for viewing daily, weather dependent, from 9am – 3pm.
The Gulf Coast Area’s award-winning Gulf Breeze Zoo is home to more than 800 native and exotic animals. The Zoo offers many hands on animal encounters and kid’s activities perfect for field trips, family day trips and exciting birthday parties.
