PENSACOLA, FLORIDA — Work on Gulf Power’s downtown modernization project in Pensacola to improve reliability will move to night work beginning Sunday, Aug. 4.

Crews are working on Palafox Street between Garden and Romana streets for the next three months. This work to upgrade the underground energy grid network will now be from 10 p.m. until 10 a.m. from Sunday through Wednesday nights. No work is planned during the weekend to avoid downtown activities.

“We worked with local businesses, the Downtown Improvement Board and the City of Pensacola to shift the work hours,” said Rick Byars, Gulf Power regional manager for external affairs. “This means less time that a traffic lane will be closed when most of the businesses are open.”

The project is a five-year, $86 million plan that will modernize the 70-year-old network delivering energy to homes and businesses in the area. Launched in March 2018, the downtown Pensacola underground project will improve reliability and resiliency for current and future customers. This modernization of the energy network under the streets and sidewalks involves replacement of concrete-encased duct systems, power cables, transformers and protection equipment. The entire project is expected to be completed by 2022.

“We are excited that we have been able to work with Gulf Power to find a solution that allows downtown businesses to meet their goals while at the same time providing Gulf Power with the flexibility to complete this vital project that will give downtown Pensacola a strong grid now and in the future,” said Lissa Dees, executive director of the Downtown Improvement Board.

Gulf Power has created a webpage to keep customers and interested parties informed on the progress of the project. Go to www.gulfpower.com/downtownupgrades.
