Leadership & Purpose
By Peggy Brockman
What do you think of when you think of that topic? Leadership is something you should be doing ALL the time! We can be leaders in our school, family, or businesses, but first we must lead ourselves! It’s about taking time out for you – taking time out for family – taking time out for your health.
I recently had the opportunity to visit with my daughters and grandchildren out on the West Coast. I took two computers and my cell phone. But something happened when I got there. I decided to focus on what was most important in life – the little bit of time I had with my family those few days. I am SO grateful I did. Yes, I had some important projects that needed to be taken care of, but NOTHING was more important than taking the time to spend quality time with family I see only once or twice a year.
I was leading myself. I was taking control of my life and focusing on what was important. And I loved EVERY minute of it! And, even though I wanted to, I did not allow myself to feel guilty for doing it. In order for us to be the best at what we do we must take time for ourselves.
December is a good time between Christmas and New Years to block out some “me time” and have a leadership retreat with yourself. It’s what great leaders do. Use this time to reconnect with your purpose, revise your vision, and set your goals for 2016. If you can’t take a full week, take a couple of days just by yourself for planning. If we fail to plan, we go in circles and we let the days pass without really knowing what we want to accomplish for our life and our business. It’s great to do this with family as well. Set aside a specific time for each family member to establish their own purpose, vision and goals and then come together to establish the family vision and goals. You must always establish YOUR purpose first then for your business or family. If your business or family vision and goals are not in alignment with your purpose, it won’t work. You won’t stick with whatever you put out there.
I recently did this with one of my coaching clients who was struggling with the ultimate path to take their business. Once they were clear on what their personal purpose was, they knew what direction their business had to go. It was clear and it was easy.
People are able to endure almost any “what” or “who” challenges when they have a solid understanding and ownership of their “why” or “purpose”. When you know your purpose, it becomes the fuel that propels your life.
Your Purpose fuels passion, power, priorities and perseverance. It is fundamental to creating new thought patterns, overcoming self-limiting beliefs and replacing destructive habits with habits that support you becoming the best possible version of YOU – physically, spiritually, emotionally, financially and intellectually.
