Eugenio Derbez’ new movie wows audiences in the United States and Mexico

The movie is a comedy film directed by Ken Marino and written by Chris Spain and Jon Zack and produced by Eugenio Derbez and Ben Odell from 3Pas Studios.

How to be a Latin Lover was released on April 28, 2017 by Pantelion Films and pulled in an estimated $12 million in the U.S. and Canada in its debut week and a total of $20.6 million in its first 10 days.  Even more impressive was its debut a week later in Mexico with an estimated $7 million take….enough to beat Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

Such a performance is history-making for Lionsgate and Grupo Televisa as the studio’s biggest opening to date!

As David Spitz, Lionsgate’s distribution chief has said to numerous media outlets, “Eugenio has star power.”

In the movie, Derbez stars as a man who falls on hard times after a career based on seducing older women.  Salma Hayek co-stars along with Rob Lowe, Kristen Bell, and the always stunning Raquel Welch.

The film’s stellar performance, from just 1,118 targeted locations, is important because of the demographics of its audience.  50% of them being were over 35, and a massive 89% of moviegoers were Latino.  This massive domestic support for a film lead by one of Mexico’s biggest stars bodes well for Derbez’ hopes to cross over and the future of Pantelion.

Derbez is no stranger to American audiences, he stunned the industry in 2013 with “Instructions Not Included”, a story he wrote, directed, produced, and starred in!  “Instructions Not Included” went on to become the highest-grossing Spanish-language film of all time and the fourth-best performing foreign-language film released in the U.S. and Canada.
