The U.S. economy added 49,000 nonfarm jobs in January, while unemployment dropped from 6.7% in December to 6.3%, reflecting loosening restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The professional and business services industry had the largest increase in employment in the private sector, adding 97,000 positions, while government jobs increased by 43,000.
