Three years ago, I got invited to partake in a new adventure… Little did I know that from that first time I would fall in love not only with a majestic new place and also with a new exciting activity. . My new majestic place is called the “Forgotten Coast”, which is a name used to describe a region made up of a few small coastal towns located in Gulf, Franklin and Wakulla County ,these areas are known for its beautiful unspoiled remote beaches, beautiful nature preserves and still mild developed and commercialized area . The “forgotten Coast” offers the nature enthusiastic an array of activities and areas to explore.
The activity I fell in love with in the “Forgotten Coast” is scalloping. Bay Scalloping is a seasonal activity, which happens once a year on the “Forgotten Coast”, which usually starts from early July to late September. What I love about harvesting bay scallops is that gives me a sense of playing a combination of underwater hide and seek with a scavenger hunt sort of feeling. Scalloping for me is an adventure from the minute I enter the water to seek them usually hidden on the bays grass beds or sand, to the moment I clean them and think about the many possible ways I can cook them. This is my “from water to table” hooray moment, it makes me fulfilled that I can catch my own dinner. it makes me fulfilled that I can catch my own dinner. There are many ways scallops can be cooked and scallop hunters are quick to offer their own favorite ways they like cooking their catch. I love cooking scallops many ways but my favorite way is very simple with garlic, butter, herbs and cheese, which can be eaten on top of your favorite bread, over pasta or on its own. . So, if you decide to embark in the scallop harvesting adventure just make sure to check out the Florida fish and wildlife Conservation website and search bay scallops for season dates, locations, limits, facts and tips.
